Filipinas need sweep of last two games in SEA Games 2023
the Filipinas are expected to get past Malaysia on Saturday to begin their fight for survival in the women’s football competitions of the 32nd Southeast Asian Games in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
Coach Alen Stajcic’s side is eager to shake off the disappointment of its defeat to Myanmar last Wednesday and secure the full three points in the match set 8p.m. local time (9 pm Manila time) at RCAF Old Stadium.
A late penalty resulted in the 1-0 loss to Myanmar, putting the World Cup-bound Filipinas in a dire situation to win their remaining two matches in Group A in order to reach the semifinals.
Malaysia is considered the inferior team of the group, and the Philippines is seen emerging with a win before it faces defending champion Vietnam on Tuesday in a match that likely determines the Filipinas‘ semifinal hopes.
Vietnam and Myanmar are level with three points apiece, the former holding top spot in the group on goal difference.
The two teams meet in Saturday’s other game, with the winner clinching the first semis slot.
It was a disappointing start for the Filipinas‘ Quest for a historic first gold medal when a disputed foul inside the box allowed Myanmar to convert the only goal late in the match.
